How anxious are you about public speaking? Let's find out!
The Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) is a scale developed by James MCCroskey in his work on communication apprehension. It is highly reliable (alpha estimates >.90) but it focuses strictly on public speaking anxiety. As such, it is, “an excellent measure for research which centers on public speaking anxiety, but is an inadequate measure of the broader communication apprehension construct.”
In other words, this is a great tool to accurately determine your personal level of public speaking anxiety. But, you MUST answer these questions carefully and honestly! Otherwise it will not work.
Instructions: Allow yourself about 20 minutes to complete the assessment. Click on the link below to open the Excel document. For each statement numbered 1-34, indicate the degree to which you agree or disagree with the statement by selecting from the drop-down list in each cell (five-point scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree). A formula will calculate your score and you can see where you fall on the scale in terms of high, moderate or low anxiety levels.
Once you have completed the assessment, please send your PRPSA score to Michael through the Contact Form on the class website. Please submit your score ONLY, do not upload the Excel file. I will keep your score completely anonymous and will share only the aggregated data with the class. This will give us insight into how we are feeling as a class about Public Speaking.
Thank you and have fun!
